Research
Torino, Italia, 1863: A Slice of Life
Fall 2024-Spring 2025
For my research project, I am honored to be working with Dr. Deborah Amberson and the University of Florida's Italian Department to dive into the history of Torino, Italy, in 1863. I will explore multiple aspects of the city to create an extensive “slice of life” for the first capital of a united Italy. There are three areas of Torino’s culture I plan to explore: the construction of the Mole Antonelliana and its connection to Torino’s religious emancipation laws, the foundation of the Club Alpino Italiano and its representation of the environmental ties between Torino and the neighboring Alps, and as a French and Italian major, I plan to take a trans-disciplinary approach by researching the House of Savoy’s reign and its representation of Torino as a crossroads between French and Italian culture.
These are my initial findings, but I expect to add more areas of research for a clearer image of life in Torino. For additional areas of study, I also plan to incorporate material history and music history into my research. I will conduct research through digital tours of the Palazzo Reale, the Mole Antonelliana, and Torino’s numerous museums. Through this project, I aim to combine numerous areas of study and the events of 1863 to create a detailed look into life in Italy’s brief but influential capital.
